Legitimate Suburban Fears

/

I realized moving to the suburbs would be a total game changer.  I accepted this challenge and gave up my NYC apartment overlooking the marina where I could see not only big sailboats, but also businessmen walking to work and pretty mommies strolling their babies.

I traded my Uppababy stroller in for a Mazda 6, and my 80sq foot nursery (not kidding) for a real bedroom.  But what I didn't know is that moving to the burbs would present a whole new list of legitimate fears.  Things that never once crossed my mind as a city girl.

Maybe some can relate to these, or perhaps I am just more paranoid than I thought!

Hope you enjoy my list.  If you have any additional fears to add, please comment below.  I like to think I am not alone in my suburban bubble.

FEAR #1: Locking my car/house keys in my trunk while trying to get the stroller out

I should have no reason to believe this will actually happen to me.  It hasn't even come close to happening, not even once.  But living in the burbs, I am constantly opening and shutting that damn trunk, and I know its bound to happen.  I recently started to jingle my keys in my pocket or hands right before shutting the trunk just for piece of mind.

FEAR #2: Falling down the stairs

This fear came to reality when I actually DID fall feet first from the top of my stairs.  It was something that I thought only happens in cartoons or TV comedies for simple comedic relief.  When we moved to the burbs, I knew I had 2 sets of stairs to be weary of.  The day after carpeting the stairs to the basement, I wiped out big time.  I wasn't even wearing socks, I was barefooted, the way you are supposed to walk down stairs.  To my relief, I did not suffer a concussion, though my head literally hit every single stair on the way down.  Never once did I have this fear in NYC. Welcome to the burbs huh.

FEAR #3: Having my security alarm go off when I'm not home

So this fear is also a reality (whomp whomp)! It was a false alarm thank goodness, but nothing quite like getting that phone call.  I was headed to the Rockefeller Preserve to take Blake for a nice walk, when I have to abort mission and head home -- a bit scared that I was about to walk in on 2 men cleaning me out.  Instead, I was greeted by the city Police Department who waited outside while I confirmed everything was still in order.  Now that I think about it, he probably should have come inside with me since I was toting a 10month old in my arms.  Not much I could have done with one arm holding Blake and the other one holding his Wubbanub.

FEAR #4: Being stuck at home during a snow storm

In NYC, snowstorms are generally pretty fun.  Restaurants and my gym are usually open and you can hop over to Central Park to go sledding.  Where we live in Westchester, you have to drive up a massive hill to get to our house.  Since we bought our car before actually finding/buying our house, we didn't get a 4-wheel drive (huge mistake).  During a snowstorm, I can barely back out of my driveway.  Luckily we had a pretty mild winter, but my fear for the first few months in this house was that I would get stuck here with a baby and run out of things to entertain him with.  I am now pitching Brooke to get us a second car, preferably an SUV (Range Rover, Suburban, 4Runner will all do)

  1. To add to your list: I legitimately worry about tree branches and/or fences falling on my head when it's windy out. We actually drive to pick up my husband from the train because I'm so worried about him getting taken out by flying wood on his walk home!

    1. Ohh that's a good one!! Trees are few and far between in NYC! We practically live in the woods out here.
